Brooke, 0. G. (1972). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 47, 525. Hypothermia in malnourished Jamaican children. An analysis was made of the 4-hourly temperature records of 137 malnourished Jamaican children, the consecutive admissions to a metabolic ward during a 3-year period. Mean rectal temperature of afebrile children during the first week in hospital was 0 52 °C lower than it was in the week before discharge. Hypothermia (rectal temperature <35 °C) occurred in 197% of the children. It was related to low weight and height but not to serum

Thermal insulation in malnourished Jamaican children.
Brooke, 0. G. (1973). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 48, 901. Thermal insulation in malnourished Jamaican children. The mean summed skinfold at 6 sites in 20 malnourished Jamaican children was 24 5 mm on admission to hospital and 49 8 mm on discharge. Marasmic children initially had thinner skinfolds than children with oedematous malnutrition, and they had a highly significant reduction in t...

Oedema and expansion of the extracellular fluid are well recognized as a complication of malnutrition in adults (McCance, 1951) as well as in children (Waterlow, Cravioto, and Stephen, 1960). An increase in total body water has also been described (Srikantia and Gopalan, 1957; Schnieden, Hendrickse, and Haigh, 1958; Smith, 1960). In the course of investigations on the renal function of malnouri...
